The history of the Amish Furniture Gallery begins in 1987, in downtown Crystal Lake IL, a small bookstore proprietor found she had too much floor space for her inventory.
Up the block the owner of a children’s clothing shop, who at the time was trying to furnish his home, was frustrated by the lack of quality hardwood furniture available at prices an average middle class family could afford. Having grown up in rural Illinois he was familiar with Amish communities and the excellent quality furniture they produced so he headed down state and started meeting builders through word of mouth. He bought an oak table and chair set, but instead of delivering it to his home, he set it up in a corner rented from the bookstore and began taking orders.
That set quickly multiplied and before long we were in our own building. Next we began getting requests for different styles as well as different wood species. So we became designers and started helping our builders source different wood types. We built our own finishing shop as we were unhappy with the finish quality Amish builders, doing their best with out electricity, were providing. From that point we have constantly refined, improved, and expanded, reaching to where we are today.
